I have been looking for good tools to use when grooming Miss Stella. I was in our local store buying dog food when I took my usual walk through the ‘goodie’ aisle, the one with all the various tools and such. One caught my eye that was not there before. At least it was not in my line of sight nor had I seen it before. I am usually pretty thorough in my searches.
The Safari Undercoat Rake
It said on the package that it was good to use with dogs having long-haired double coats. Hhhhmmm. Sounds like us.
Apparently this undercoat rake supposedly moves deep into the coat and remove loose fur without pulling and removing other hair. It has tapered pins that work well with thick, heavy coats, and has little ‘drag’ when pulling the teeth through the coat. It can be a chore trying to make sure I am getting all the way through both coats to the loose hair hiding beneath Miss Stella’s top coat. This rake seems to move smoothly through her fur. The handle is comfortable and easy to grip allowing for easy combing which is a plus. You do not finish brushing Miss Stella in a few short strokes. You are brushing for some time so in my book, it is important to have comfortable and good tools.
I really have enjoyed using this undercoat rake so far. It is very comfortable, pulls out the undercoat shedding easily, and has little to no dragging when combing. Miss Stella seems content when being brushed with it which means I can get more of her fur maintenance complete without so much time spent in ‘wrestling’ mode. Compared to other rakes that I have used, this one seems to really get the job done. When finishing just a few strokes, the rake needs cleaned which makes it feel as if it is doing a very thorough job. The only possible negative I have noticed so far is that if I brush her just after being outside, or brush too quickly, it sounds as if there may be some static electricity being created. When this occurs I usually take a break, or change where I am brushing on her body.
So far I am very pleased with this Safari Undercoat Rake. I plan on looking into more of this company’s products for Miss Stella’s grooming needs in the near future. Goodness knows there will always be some grooming to get done with a Newf hanging around the house.
I have not been asked to share my views about this product by anyone. I have not been paid nor received any sort of offers. I am just sharing this info as a part of my search to find good grooming products for my Newfoundland pup.

Safari is a pretty good brand! It’s durable and it gets the job done and it’s not as expensive as some of my other grooming tools. For the static, get yourself some spray leave in conditioner. Anytime the hair gets a little static in it, give it a light spritz. The conditioner will help keep her skin and coat moist in the winter months from the heater being on and it will make her soft and shiny! The salon is super dry this time of year, and I usually walk out with all that hair all over my pants, face, arms, sleeves, and anything else the hair can stick too!
I have some spray in conditioner I use and I have found that if you rub a dryer sheet over the rake it helps as well. I can only imagine the hair for you in the salon! I now keep a lint roller by the back door and in my car for the hair that tends to follow me out the door! : )
She looks marvelous, I’m glad you found something that works and you are both comfortable with.
Thank you Jodi. It is nice to find something that actually does what it says it will do. : )
Her coat looks gorgeous. Such a healthy shine.
I have a Furminator I used on Cat who had a very dense coat. He loved it. The woman I bought it from used hers on her cat, dogs and horse!
Thank you. I have thought about buying a Furminator. They look like they would do a great job. Pretty pricey for us right now, so I will have to wait a while before I try it.
Her coat looks fabulous, it looks like the rake did a good job, oh and of course the person behind it too
,
Thanks Misty. : ) She is a hoot to brush out.
OMG, she looks so silky, shiny! She should be in a shampoo commercial!
I need one of those for Chewy. His coat is ridiculous. ALl my other shelties have always had easy to care for coats. I’m afraid of what Chewy is hiding under all that!
Thank you. I like this tool. A plus is that she does not want to chew the handle like she does on our other rake! I am not sure if there is a scent or it is the color, but she always tries to chew the other handle, and has not done so with the Safari one. : )
Your pups always look beautiful!
I use the same one for my 4 legs baby .
it is great
It is. We have to keep them groomed and this is doing a great job for us. : )
This looks like a great rake! Love the pictures, Stella is so gorgeous!
Thank you : ) I really like it so far.
Mom is always looking for a good brush for us too. So far a pin fusion brush and a comb are the best. She might have to give this one a test too.
Stella looks gorgeous.
Woos ~ Phantom, Thunder, Ciara, and Lightning
I have not tried the pin fusion on her yet. We have a slicker and believe it or not, a good old fashioned wide tooth comb. This rake is great at getting the shed out but I will have to investigate a pin fusion. Your pups always look gorgeous so I have to check this tool out! : )
That sure looks like a great comb – Mum doesn’t have one of those – yet!
Her favourite so far is one that will get knots out ‘easily’ – It has a ‘V’ shape to it – grooming sure is a big part of my life too……
Your pal Snoopy
We are liking it. More so than the others we have tried. I have seen the “V” one, I think. I have been thinking of trying it but it looked almost complicated…bol!
We used to use a rake on our Golden, that sounds like a product we would have loved.
It really seems to get all of the shed out from under the coat without stressing the top coat. Hope all is well with you.
Isn’t it great to stumble upon good products?

It is great when you find something you think will work well, and then it does!
