Little Miss Loves Her Mudbath

I should have known something was up when it seemed a little too quiet and she had not come “knocking” on the back porch door. Eventually I heard a whine and patting at the door window but Miss Stella was not sitting and waiting. She lolled on her belly with her nose pressed against the glass. I believe she was laughing. She had a great surprise to share and wanted everyone to join in her joy. Uuuhhhmmm….

Let us just say that Miss Stella has discovered mud. A lot of mud. She has had her share of getting dirty and wet but not all out mud. Now mind you, I know this is not as much mud as she could have gotten into, nor is it the only time she will venture into some sort of mud bliss. However, you need to remember what color she is. Brown. Reddish brown. Just like the dirt around here. And the greatest amount, and wettest, was on her underside from her chin to her tail.

Lugging this 35 pound 13 week old giant to a tub was an adventure in itself. Between her weight, bulkiness, slimeyness, and attacking the towels, we almost had the biggest mud road going straight through my living room! We finally made it to the tub and you need to remember that Newfies love the water. She seemed intrigued by the faucet, but not so much about saying good-bye to her newfound mud coat. She actually seemed somewhat displeased with this concept.

Having worked so hard digging up a mud hole, dragging her muddy belly into the kitchen, and attacking the towels while being carried, Miss Stella became a tad bit thirsty and figured the cup was as good as her bowl. Actually better. This cup got her wet all over unlike her water bowl that usually only worked for ear tips, chin, and the occasional foot (or two).

Suds and mud rinsed from both her and the tub (who knew how quickly the white tub would look like gallons of brown paint spilled and splattered into every crook and cranny of the tub), Miss Stella helped herself out of the tub. Then she proceeded to shake. It was sort of like riding “Splash Mountain.”  Enough said.

It was time to attempt to towel dry as much as possible. Yeah, right. This is just another chew toy. Using a towel, no matter the size or absorbency rate, is equal to using a tissue to wipe up spilled milk. It just does not work out as well as planned.  It takes more than you thought. (I have discovered we do not have enough towels in this house and I have raised twin girls here, just so you know.)

Finally, I had her to where  I thought she was just damp as opposed to soaking wet. It was time for the dryer. A dryer that works well on my head, but with a Newfie coat…well… a tad bit time-consuming. Trying to make sure that I got her completely dry was a huge task. Between how much water there actually was still on her and her wanting to play with the hair dryer, I was working against the odds.

Eventually we succeeded. Miss Stella was clean, brushed, and beginning to seem a tad bit tired (reminded me of bathing my twins as infants or toddlers…sleep comes shortly after a bath). She conned some hugs and “ups” using her sweet silly face. Laughter was plentiful and that sweet puppy smell had returned.

Once those paws hit the floor though, you can only guess where she THOUGHT she was going. I will have to save her next shenanigan for later.

  1. Bwahahaha! It’s great to see that she’s not afraid to get down and dirty, having old fashion fun in the mud! I can only imagine the time and energy that it takes to bathe her. Geeesh! Looks like she got the whole do-over, including a blow dry. :)

    • Oh trust me….she is definitely not afraid to get down and dirty. She can be a magnet to mud. It does take time and a lot of energy but it is usually quite comical so the time is well spent. We are working on her “accepting” the hair dryer as her friend and not her enemy. She sits at my feet and barks at it as if it is attacking me when I am drying my hair. : ) Thank you so much for stopping by my blog, hanging out, and striking up a conversation. : )

  4. LOL. I laughed throughout the whole post. Miss Stella looks so tiny when her fur is all wet. And that last picture is fantastic – she would convince me of forgiving anything she had done. Love how she tries to put her big paw on the dryer.
Just how wet did you get while washing her? I’m sooo glad my cat is self-cleaning.

    • I am glad you got a bit of a chuckle out of this. She makes us laugh often. That face…well, she usually is extra “squishy” in the mornings when I leave for work and it always kills me! The bath was a success, however I had to change my clothes when finished as I was soaked when all was said and done. : )
